Guide to Real Nappies
Real nappies are SO easy to use these days - just as easy as disposables.
Some real nappy facts:
• Most real nappies fasten with Velcro or poppers
• Some come in 2 or 3 sizes
• Others are one-size and are adjustable to fit from baby to toddler
• Real nappies do not leak and offer better containment than disposables.
• They can be washed at 30°C, 40°C or 60°C, either separately or with your normal washing
• Most can be tumble-dried on a low heat
• Many are very quick-drying
Real nappies are either "all-in-one" or separates. "All-in-one" type nappies have the absorbency and waterproofing together. Nappy separates are a two-part system with an absorbent nappy and a separate waterproof cover.
With either option, liners can be used inside the nappy to catch any solids and protect the nappy. Paper liners are flushable and biodegradable so any solids can be put straight down the toilet with the liner. Reusable fleece liners are available too and these help to wick moisture away from your baby's skin.
When you have changed your baby, the used nappy goes into a lidded bucket or waterproof bag, until you are ready to do a wash. There is no need to soak nappies.
For full-time use, you will need between 15 and 25 nappies (depending on the drying time of the fabric and washing frequency). If using nappy separates, you will need 3 or 4 waterproof covers in each size. If you are unsure what/how many nappies you need, please contact us for advice.
